Voice Announcer not audible on Television / Speaker
The Voice Announcer utilizes TTS (Text-To-Speech) technology. If have exported your display to a TV, and the audio is functional, except the Voice Announcer only comes through your laptop, see below for some troubleshooting recommendations:
The first step is to choose the most standard voice:
- Google US English or Tom
Next, make sure you are using the Google Chrome browser
If making those two changes above don't work, the feature may simply not be compatible with your TV or Bluetooth speaker. However, here are some additional troubleshooting options:
- Default output device: Some browsers (Chrome, Edge, etc.) allow you to override which audio device a specific tab or app uses. If the browser is pinned to “Internal Speakers” while the system default is your Bluetooth speaker, TTS might still come out of the laptop until you change it in your OS sound settings or in the browser’s media routing settings.
- Platform differences: On macOS and Windows, the default audio routing generally applies to all system audio, including TTS voices. On some Linux distributions or in virtualized setups, you might need to check audio routing in PulseAudio / PipeWire.
Check system sound output per app
On Windows:
Go to Settings → System → Sound → Advanced sound options (App volume and device preferences). You can assign your browser specifically to the TV/HDMI device.
On macOS:
By default all audio routes through the selected device in System Settings → Sound. But some voices may still ignore it. A utility like Loopback or Audio Hijack can force-route all audio (including TTS) to the HDMI device.
Change the default TTS voice/output
- On macOS: In System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content, you can pick voices, but not always the device. Some third-party apps let you redirect TTS voices.
- On Windows: Control Panel → Speech settings → change voice engine. Some newer SAPI voices respect the default audio device.
Force your browser to follow device routing
- Chrome/Edge sometimes have hidden media routing settings where you can right-click the tab → “Send audio to” → pick device.
